Context
The onboarding phase was the first step in the WP Credits program and was designed to prepare participants before making their first contribution to the WordPress community. During this stage, I became familiar with how the program is organized, the tools I will use throughout the experience, and the best practices for collaborating in an open-source project.
Completing this stage was essential because it helped me understand how the WordPress community works and what is expected from every participant before contributing to a real project.
Procedure
During the onboarding process, I completed several activities that helped me become familiar with the program and its workflow.
First, I learned how the WP Credits program is organized, how to track my progress using the individual tracking link, and why maintaining regular communication with my mentor is important throughout the program.
Next, I updated my WordPress.org profile so it accurately represented me as a contributor and configured my Gravatar account to ensure my profile picture appears across WordPress community platforms.
Another important step was joining the global Slack workspace and the #wpcredits channel, where students, mentors, and contributors communicate. I learned that most collaboration within the WordPress community happens through asynchronous communication, allowing contributors from different countries and time zones to work together effectively.
I also completed several introductory courses covering open-source principles, the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, how decisions are made within the WordPress project, community meeting etiquette, writing in the WordPress voice, and basic conflict resolution principles.
Finally, I created my personal WordPress website, which will serve as the place where I document my progress and publish the reflections required throughout the program.
Obstacles
The biggest challenge during the onboarding process was creating and customizing my personal website. Although I already had some basic experience with WordPress, I needed time to understand the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, choose an appropriate theme, customize the content, and organize the pages to meet the program requirements.
It also took some time to understand how tools such as Slack, WordPress.org, and the program’s tracking system work together throughout the contribution process.
Lessons Learned
After completing the onboarding, I realized that WordPress is much more than a content management system. It is a global community where thousands of contributors work together to continuously improve the project.
I also learned the importance of clear communication, respecting community guidelines, and collaborating effectively within an open-source environment.
Additionally, I now have a much better understanding of how the WordPress ecosystem is organized and how even small contributions can positively impact users around the world.
Reflection
Completing the onboarding gave me a much clearer understanding of how the WordPress community operates and made me feel prepared to begin contributing. This stage not only introduced me to the tools I will use throughout the program, but also helped me better understand how collaboration works within an open-source project.
I am now excited to begin contributing to the Polyglots team, continue learning, and make meaningful translations that benefit the WordPress community.
