Context
After completing the WP Credits onboarding process and choosing Polyglots as my contribution area, I began working on my first translations for the Astra theme in the Spanish (Costa Rica) (es_CR) locale.
From the beginning, the process was easier than I expected. The translation platform is intuitive, and each string provides enough context to understand what is being translated before submitting a suggestion. This allowed me to work confidently and complete my first contributions without major difficulties.
Procedure
I accessed the Astra project on translate.wordpress.org and reviewed the strings that were still awaiting translation.
Before submitting each suggestion, I carefully read the original text and analyzed its context to ensure the translation sounded natural for Costa Rican Spanish. Once I was satisfied with each translation, I submitted it through the Polyglots suggestion system.
After completing several contributions, I visited my WordPress.org profile to verify that my translations were reflected in my contribution history.
Challenges
The translation process itself went smoothly, and I was able to complete the strings without any issues.
However, when I checked my WordPress.org profile, I noticed that my contribution statistics did not match the number of translations I had submitted. At that point, only one translation appeared as approved and another as suggested, while the remaining contributions were not reflected in the system.
At first, I thought I had made a mistake during the submission process. After discussing the issue with other WP Credits participants, I found out that several of them were experiencing the same problem. This suggested that it was a temporary system issue rather than an error in my contributions.
What I Learned
This experience helped me better understand how the Polyglots workflow operates.
I learned that translations go through a review process before being approved and that contributor statistics are not always updated immediately. I also realized the importance of keeping evidence of my contributions and verifying the situation before assuming I had made a mistake.
In addition, I gained a better understanding of how open-source projects rely on collaborative review processes and that patience is an important part of contributing to the community.
Reflection
My first translation experience was very positive. The platform was easy to use and gave me the opportunity to contribute to a real WordPress project.
Although I experienced a temporary issue with my contribution statistics, it did not reduce my motivation to continue participating. Instead, it helped me better understand the Polyglots review workflow and showed me that occasional technical issues are part of working in large collaborative open-source communities.
I look forward to continuing my contributions while improving my translation skills and supporting the WordPress community.
